Our Travels - Day 8: Norseman to Ongerup: August 26th 2007

A welcome sight this morning was the arrival of Cedar Armstrong who had transported Dick Garnett's fully restored 9G from Gnowangerup on his truck to be used for the continuation of our trip.

George's tractor was safely stored in Norseman and we were able to again maintain speed of 70-75 klms/hour as we continued westward.

To members of the Chamberlain 9G Club who met up with us at Gibson and supplied us with a very welcome cuppa etc. – our heartfelt thanks to all of you for your support.

We heard earlier that a strong front was coming in which we ran into just before Ravensthorpe, but all vehicles traveled well.

More 9G members and local community met us at Ravensthorpe with a delicious lunch, fresh fruit salad and refreshments.  Thanks you guys.

At Jerramungup we were met by 9G members from Albany with their tractors and they escorted us into Ongerup.  A good supporter of the club and his daughters also came from Albany to escort us.  The Lions Club of Jerramungup donated $231.50 towards our fundraising – thank you so much to the Jerramungup community for your support.

A big group of people met us in Ongerup where a wonderful evening’s entertainment was organised.  The Ongerup Community Development Group and Yongergnow committees, families and many locals are to be sincerely thanked for their amazing support.

Local identity Barry Savage was in the ‘hot chair’ first off.  He had previously offered to have his full head of hair and beard shaved off if $1000 was raised.  Nikki – the lovely hairdresser from neighboring Jerramungup happily carried out the deed and the pavilion was in awe as the ‘real Barry’ gradually emerged.  Especially Jan, Barry’s wife of 35 years, who had never seen Barry bald, or without a beard!!  A purple wig and TEC cap were promptly placed on his head to keep him warm.  Sincere thanks to Barry for his support in raising $1173.00 towards our cause – what a wonderful effort Barry.

Andrew Markov from Albany Men’s Resource Centre gave a thought provoking talk on men’s’ health issues.  Unfortunately we weren’t able to allocate him longer to speak.

Thank you Andrew for taking the time to come to Ongerup to pass on this important message.

A delicious meal was enjoyed by all,  supplied and prepared by OCD/Yongergnow members.
Orantje Tractor winery Albany supplied wine for the bar and we thank them for also attending and hope they had a successful and enjoyable evening.

Don Boyle from Broomehill gave a talk about his experience with prostate cancer and described how even though he felt remarkably healthy, his wife insisted that he have a prostate check – luckily he went along it was found that he had prostate cancer.  Don described his experiences and urged all men in the room to make an appointment with their doctor.  Don is continuing treatment and is well on the way to recovery.

The organisers of the function had done a wonderful job with keeping the evening flowing, with a quiz and raffle included.  ‘Betty’ aka Dick Garnett kept us laughing with her humorous antics.

We stayed at the Ongerup Caravan Park – many thanks to Bernie and Sandy for their hospitality.
